1. Purpose
The Internship Framework establishes the standards, procedures, responsibilities, and governance for supervised practical training undertaken by Student Members of the National Institute of Caregivers (NIC Nigeria).
The internship programme enables learners to apply classroom knowledge in real caregiving environments under professional supervision while demonstrating the competencies required for professional certification.
Successful completion of an approved internship is a mandatory requirement for eligibility to receive the NIC National Certified Nursing Assistant (NCNA) credential.
2. Objectives
The Internship Framework seeks to:
Bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.
Develop competent, confident, and ethical caregivers.
Ensure practical application of knowledge and skills.
Promote safe caregiving practices.
Encourage professional behaviour and accountability.
Provide structured supervision and mentorship.
Verify workplace competence before professional certification.
3. Scope
This Framework applies to:
Student Members undertaking internship.
Accredited Care Facilities.
Accredited Care Agencies.
Approved Internship Providers.
Internship Supervisors.
Accredited Training Partners.
NIC Nigeria Administrators.
4. Eligibility
A Student Member becomes eligible to commence internship after successfully completing:
The NIC Nigeria Fundamental Caregiving Programme.
At least one approved NIC Nigeria Advanced Specialty Programme.
Students who have not met these requirements shall not commence an internship recognised by NIC Nigeria.
5. Approved Internship Providers
Internships shall only be undertaken at organisations approved by NIC Nigeria.
Approved providers may include:
Accredited Care Facilities.
Accredited Care Agencies.
Hospitals approved by NIC Nigeria.
Community health organisations approved by NIC Nigeria.
Other organisations specifically approved by the Institute.
NIC Nigeria reserves the right to inspect, approve, suspend, or withdraw internship provider status.
6. Duration
The minimum internship period shall be:
**Three (3) consecutive months of supervised practical training.**
The Governing Council may prescribe longer periods for specialist programmes or future qualifications.
Students shall complete the full prescribed duration before becoming eligible for certification.
7. Internship Placement
Internship placements may be:
Arranged by Accredited Training Partners.
Secured directly by the student with an Approved Internship Provider.
Coordinated by NIC Nigeria.
Regardless of the placement method, all internships must be approved by NIC Nigeria before commencement.
8. Internship Supervision
Each intern shall be assigned a qualified Internship Supervisor.
The Supervisor shall:
Guide the student's practical learning.
Observe workplace performance.
Provide mentoring.
Verify attendance.
Assess competency.
Confirm successful completion.
Supervisors must act honestly, fairly, and professionally.
9. Learning Outcomes
During the internship, students shall demonstrate competence in areas including:
Personal care.
Infection prevention and control.
Communication skills.
Documentation and record keeping.
Safeguarding vulnerable persons.
Ethical practice.
Professional conduct.
Health and safety.
Teamwork.
Respect for dignity and diversity.
Time management.
Practical caregiving skills relevant to their training.
NIC Nigeria may prescribe additional competency requirements for specialist programmes.
10. Internship Logbook
Every intern shall maintain an official NIC Nigeria Internship Logbook.
The Logbook shall record:
Placement details.
Attendance.
Daily or weekly learning activities.
Practical procedures performed.
Reflections on learning.
Supervisor comments.
Competency achievements.
The digital version of the Logbook shall be maintained within the NIC Nigeria Portal.
11. Attendance
Interns shall maintain satisfactory attendance throughout the internship period.
Extended absences without approved justification may require additional internship time before completion is recognised.
Approved Internship Providers shall maintain attendance records and submit them to NIC Nigeria upon request.
12. Professional Conduct
Interns shall:
Respect the dignity and rights of care recipients.
Maintain confidentiality.
Follow workplace policies.
Observe health and safety requirements.
Demonstrate professionalism at all times.
Respect supervisors, colleagues, and clients.
Wear appropriate identification where required.
Serious misconduct during internship may result in suspension from the programme.
13. Internship Assessment
Assessment shall consider:
Practical competence.
Professional behaviour.
Communication skills.
Ethical conduct.
Attendance.
Supervisor evaluations.
Completion of required learning activities.
Assessment shall focus on demonstrated competence rather than time served alone.
14. Internship Verification
Upon completion, the Internship Provider shall submit verification through the NIC Nigeria Portal.
Verification shall confirm:
Placement details.
Internship duration.
Attendance.
Supervisor approval.
Competency assessment.
Successful completion.
NIC Nigeria may request supporting documentation or conduct independent verification before accepting the internship.
15. Internship Completion Certificate
Following successful verification, NIC Nigeria shall issue an official Internship Verification Certificate.
This certificate confirms successful completion of the required supervised practical training.
It does not, on its own, confer professional certification.
16. Relationship to NCNA Certification
Completion of the internship satisfies one of the mandatory requirements for the NIC National Certified Nursing Assistant (NCNA) credential.
NCNA certification shall only be awarded after NIC Nigeria confirms:
Successful completion of the Fundamental Programme.
Successful completion of an approved Advanced Specialty Programme.
Successful verification of the required internship.
Compliance with any additional requirements established by NIC Nigeria.
17. Responsibilities
NIC Nigeria shall:
Approve internship providers.
Maintain internship standards.
Monitor internship quality.
Verify internship completion.
Maintain internship records.
Issue Internship Verification Certificates.
Accredited Training Partners shall:
Prepare students for internship.
Assist students in securing placements where appropriate.
Monitor student progress.
Cooperate with internship providers.
Internship Providers shall:
Provide suitable learning opportunities.
Assign qualified supervisors.
Maintain attendance records.
Evaluate intern performance.
Verify internship completion honestly.
Student Members shall:
Participate actively.
Maintain professional conduct.
Complete the Internship Logbook.
Respect workplace rules.
Demonstrate safe caregiving practices.
Submit all required documentation.
18. Suspension or Termination of Internship
An internship may be suspended or terminated where:
Serious misconduct occurs.
Fraudulent documentation is submitted.
Unsafe practice places clients at risk.
Attendance requirements are not met.
The Internship Provider loses approval status.
NIC Nigeria shall determine whether additional internship time or reassessment is required.
19. Appeals
Students and Internship Providers may appeal internship-related decisions in accordance with the NIC Nigeria Complaints, Appeals & Disciplinary Framework.
20. Review
This Framework shall be reviewed periodically by the Governing Council of the National Institute of Caregivers (NIC Nigeria) to ensure that internship standards continue to reflect best practices in caregiver education, workplace learning, and professional development.
