1. Purpose
The Research, Innovation & Publications Framework establishes the policies governing research activities, innovation, knowledge development, publications, and dissemination of professional information under the authority of the National Institute of Caregivers (NIC Nigeria).
The Framework recognises that advancing the caregiving profession requires continuous research, evidence generation, innovation, and the sharing of knowledge to improve caregiver education, professional practice, and the quality of care delivered throughout Nigeria.
2. Objectives
This Framework seeks to:
Promote research that advances caregiving practice.
Encourage evidence-based decision-making.
Support innovation in caregiver education and service delivery.
Publish professional standards and guidance.
Contribute to national health and social care policy.
Encourage collaboration between academia, industry, government, and development partners.
Establish NIC Nigeria as the national centre of excellence for caregiving knowledge.
3. Scope
This Framework applies to:
NIC Nigeria.
Members of the Institute.
Accredited Training Partners.
Accredited Care Facilities.
Accredited Care Agencies.
Approved Instructors.
Researchers working under the authority or sponsorship of NIC Nigeria.
4. Guiding Principles
Research conducted under the authority of NIC Nigeria shall be:
Ethical.
Evidence-based.
Transparent.
Independent.
Respectful of human dignity.
Scientifically sound.
Relevant to national needs.
Conducted in the public interest.
5. Areas of Research
NIC Nigeria may undertake or support research in areas including:
Caregiver education.
Elderly care.
Home care.
Disability support.
Mental health support.
Dementia care.
Palliative and end-of-life care.
Community care.
Workforce development.
Caregiver wellbeing.
Care technologies.
Digital health.
Quality improvement.
Patient and client safety.
Public health and community outreach.
Any other area approved by the Governing Council.
6. Research Ethics
All research undertaken under the authority of NIC Nigeria shall comply with recognised ethical standards.
Researchers shall:
Respect the rights and dignity of participants.
Obtain informed consent where required.
Protect confidential information.
Maintain data integrity.
Avoid fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism.
Declare conflicts of interest.
Where required by law or institutional policy, researchers shall obtain approval from an appropriately recognised Research Ethics Committee before commencing research.
7. Research Partnerships
NIC Nigeria may establish research collaborations with:
Universities.
Teaching hospitals.
Government ministries, departments, and agencies.
Professional bodies.
International organisations.
Development partners.
Non-governmental organisations.

Partnerships shall support the advancement of caregiving knowledge while preserving the independence and integrity of the Institute.

Books and learning resources.
Newsletters.
Statistical reports on the caregiving profession.
Publications shall be reviewed to ensure quality, accuracy, and relevance.
10. Knowledge Repository
NIC Nigeria shall maintain a digital Knowledge Repository within the NIC Nigeria Portal.
The Repository may contain:
Research publications.
Standards.
Frameworks.
Practice guidelines.
Learning resources.
Policy documents.
Approved curricula.
Statistical reports.
Historical records of the Institute.
Access levels may vary depending on the nature of the material.
11. Intellectual Property
Unless otherwise agreed in writing:
Publications produced by NIC Nigeria remain the intellectual property of the Institute.
Institution-developed curricula remain the intellectual property of the originating institution, subject to the Curriculum Approval Framework.
Research produced through collaborative projects shall be governed by the applicable partnership agreement.
Proper acknowledgement shall be given to all contributors.
12. Research Grants and Funding
NIC Nigeria may:
Award research grants.
Sponsor research projects.
Receive research funding.
Establish research fellowship programmes.
Partner with funding organisations.
Acceptance of funding shall not compromise the independence, integrity, or objectivity of research findings.
13. Responsibilities
NIC Nigeria shall:

Maintain the Knowledge Repository.

Members shall:

Cooperate with approved research activities where appropriate.
14. Recognition of Excellence
NIC Nigeria may recognise outstanding contributions to research and innovation through honours such as:
Research Excellence Award.
Innovation in Caregiving Award.
Outstanding Publication Award.
Distinguished Contribution to Caregiver Education.
Lifetime Contribution to Caregiving Research.
15. Relationship with Other Frameworks
This Framework complements:
The Training & Education Framework.

The Inspection & Compliance Framework.
Research findings may inform future revisions of NIC Nigeria policies, standards, curricula, and professional guidance.
16. Review
This Framework shall be reviewed periodically by the Governing Council of the National Institute of Caregivers (NIC Nigeria) to ensure that research, innovation, and publication activities continue to support the advancement of caregiving practice, professional education, and public welfare in Nigeria.
